How Important is Technology in Schools?
//Posted by Redd School

Using technology in schools has become an important talking point for parents, as many schools have yet to integrate programs that teach children how to utilize computers, the Internet and other digital tools. Some arguments suggest that the benefit of implementing technology is not worth the high cost. We disagree. But just how important is it to incorporate the digital world into the classroom? Here are a few benefits that make a big impact.

Access to a broad range of resources

Access to computers and the Internet provides students a broad range of resources to conduct research. Not to mention, in-classroom research gives teachers the opportunity to teach students how to assess quality information online and when to disregard unreliable sources. Kids today are already learning to search Google for the answer to their questions beyond what’s in their textbook. It’s important that they know how to do so properly.

Preparation for the real world

Technology is an integral part of how we work and live. The 21st century demands practical technology skills, from creating presentations to identifying reliable sources on the Internet and email etiquette. Teaching students how to use technology from an early age will better prepare them for their careers. It can also help reduce the fear of new technology in the future by familiarizing them with the process.

Skills beyond digital literacy

STEM curriculum integrates multiple learning environments in order to foster experiential learning and facilitate inquiry-based, student-centered experiences. Students who use technology in the classroom today will be more adapted to using it in the future, beyond simple digital literacy — building on higher-level thinking skills, problem solving and creativity. Redd School prepares students for a broad range of technological fields, from robotics to video production.

Facilitates peer collaboration

In a research project conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, many educators reported that technology facilitated peer collaboration. They noted that when students were assigned to small groups for technology-based projects, those students who already had certain computer and technology skills routinely assisted less skilled students. Peer tutoring, mentoring, and collaboration were the unexpected results of the technology integration.

At Redd School, we understand that today, more than ever, technology plays an integral role in how young people learn, develop and interact with the world around them. In order to meet these needs, we’ve developed a core of STEM-focused projects and programs that include computer science, video production, podcasting, radio, robotics and engineering, as well as design and construction.
