Parent Tips for Tracking Student Progress
//Posted by Redd School

You probably want to know more about your child’s education and development beyond signing off on a few report cards each year. However, it can be tough managing work, activities and the seemingly endless list of other obligations. That’s why we put together 3 points to help you stay in check in making sure that monitoring your child's education is a top priority.

The teacher is your partner

A lack of communication with the teacher can be one of the biggest problems parents face when monitoring their child's academic progress. Remember, the teacher is your partner in educating your child. It is important to have face-to-face or phone meetings along with frequent email exchanges. Does your child learn best in the front row? Do they struggle with any subjects? This a great opportunity to make sure your teacher knows the specifics about your child. Don’t be afraid to reach out to ask if there is anything you need to know on how your child is doing.

Talk about school at home

Express interest in what your child is doing in school.  When they arrive at home, take a moment to ask them about their day. Soon, they will be eager to share with you what they learned and you will have the opportunity to discuss their accomplishments and goals. Be sure to praise in the right direction. For younger children, it’s a good idea to empty their backpack and look through notes, calendars and homework assignments. This will help keep you in the loop if they forget to tell you something.

Find ways to get involved

There are many ways to participate in your child’s experience at school, such as volunteering, attending events or chaperoning field trips. Try to get to know the parents of your child's friends as networking can give insight to other issues that might be going on in the school community. You could also maintain contact with substitute teachers, PTA members, and regular classroom volunteers.

At Redd School, we have an open door policy and encourage parents to be as involved. Please feel free to stop by for a visit or give us a call at any time.
