Our History and Philosophy
History and Philosophy
Redd School was established in 1969 in the Houston suburb of Bellaire by Sara Redd and Denna Baskin. Ms. Redd and Mrs. Baskin felt that most schools didn't have the flexibility necessary to serve children well. They wanted to establish an environment where each student felt respected and challenged and where each student was able to use his/her personal learning styles in a successful way. Personal growth, self esteem and becoming an enthusiastic, lifelong learner were and still are an important part of the school philosophy.
The Five C's
-
Character -- A child's formative years provide the foundation for life. Redd School teachers make the most of those years by building a students values and consideration of others--qualities that extend far beyond the classroom.
-
Competence --Academic achievement is a hallmark of Redd School graduates, who learn not by rote but by grasping lessons with broad applications. From creative texts to computer workshops, Redd School teachers instill an enduring appreciation for learning that students draw upon throughout their academic careers.
-
Confidence --Self assurance and confidence are the products of achievement. The Redd School constantly emphasizes the positive by encouraging children to reach out for new challenges without fear of failure or criticism.
-
Curiosity --Why? This question embodies the very nature of being a child--and the Redd School presents a perfect environment in which to both ask and answer it. Our classroom and outdoor settings continually provoke a student's curiosity and challenge their imaginations.
-
Creativity --Redd School believes that children should learn through their play; children should be children. We make the most of child's play by innovative educational techniques that make learning a fun, creative experience.
